VOODOO

I started making this the day D'Angelo passed. Having just returned from New Orleans, I thought Voodoo seemed a fitting theme to run with. Upon doing my research into Voodoo rituals and culture, it didn't take long to find inspiration. Zangbeto are traditional Voodoo guardians of the night acting as spiritual police and protectors of the community. Appearing as large, spinning cone-shaped costumes made of grass or raffia, they are believed to be inhabited by spirits that protect against evil and enforce laws. As usual, what started as a small project quickly ballooned into something more. It was such a pleasure to figure out and design every aspect of the scene. From the designs on the characters' clothes, to the little scratches and details in the textures, even down to directing exactly how and when each electric strike hits. That is the joy of creation for me. You could tell an AI to do all that for you, but it will never make decisions the same way you would have if you tried it on your own.
